Creativity and Culture in the CLIL Classroom
Learning outcomes
Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of the 4 Cs and their applications in an educational setting. Understanding of how to adapt and model the 4 Cs framework while being mindful of the diversity of learners in order to establish equitable and inclusive learning environments.
Participants will be able to use modelling and application of the 4 Cs competences at various developmental stages in education, through active learning activities.
Participants will discover different ways to combine content and language using a transdisciplinary approach that connects learners with sustainability and cultural issues.
Brief description
An introduction to the fundamental principles of a CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) classroom and how any CLIL program depends not only on the integration of content and language but on the successful collaboration of teachers and the wider educational community. This course will delve into the core principles of CLIL, the 4 Cs, Content, Communication, Cognition and Culture. It will also look at the 4 Cs of 21st century skills, Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration and Creativity with a broader view of:
- Developing students understanding of how art, expression and culture provide powerful means for sustainability and education.
- Developing students’ interpersonal and colla borative competencies.
- Developing students’ cognitive and critical thinking skills.
- Understanding the importance of diversity and inclusivity and encouraging students as a learner resource.
- Creating partnerships and connections with other schools and the wider educational community, for example eTwinning and ESEP.
Schedule
Day 1 – Introduction to CLIL and its place in bilingual education
- Warm-up and group building exercises
- Discussion and evaluation of expectations and previous competences and experiences
- Overview of the 4 Cs of CLIL
- Overview of the 4 Cs of 21st Century skills
Day 2 – Strategies and techniques to develop the 4 Cs in the classroom
- Sharing of experiences and techniques
- Gamification and ICT as tools to develop the 4 Cs competences
Day 3 – Techniques for modelling and prompting students to use their critical thinking skills
- Active Learning strategies to develop communication and collaboration skills
- Making cultural connections that are meaningful and authentic
Day 4 – Teaching transdisciplinary skills through Art and advancing sustainability through art
- Embracing Diversity in the classroom and giving students a voice
- Creating a safe environment for students to share their creativity and understanding how art welcomes different perspectives
Day 5 – Presentation of collaborative group work and peer review
- Peer and group feedback
- Evaluation of acquisition of competencies
Moira Allen has a Bachelor's degree in English and Sociology and a Master's degree with distinction in Bilingual Education. She has over ten years' experience in an international bilingual school system, using CLIL methodology and the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. In addition, she holds certificates in English language teaching (CELTA and YL) and has over 15 years' experience in this field. Moira also has a background in Human Resources and Training and worked in this field in both London and Dublin.
She has designed and developed courses for teachers at primary, secondary and tertiary level to promote a collaborative and more inclusive educational environment. She has extensive experience in a range of teaching environments and student age profiles and is experienced in creating and developing materials for CLIL and teacher training courses as well as EFL materials for all levels. Moira currently teaches online and runs Erasmus+ teacher training courses in Spain, Ireland and Portugal, focusing on CLIL methodologies and 21st century pedagogical practices.
